Every Turn Tells a Tale

Explore Sydney one turn at a time. We are known as the “Celtic Heart of North America” for a reason. Step out of our front doors and into a city where our Gaelic roots are woven into the sounds, sights and stories of every unforgettable moment.

At The Simon Sydney Hotel, we believe that a great vacation doesn’t need to be measured in distance travelled but enjoyed in the memories made along the way. With the harbour at our doorstep and the city’s charm within walking distance, every turn tells a tale, all you have to do is follow it.

Whether you’re a history buff, a culture seeker or a dog-lover, the best of Sydney is only a stroll away. With so much within walking distance, you can spend less time on the road and more time discovering.

Our Celtic Heart Beats Strong

Discover Sydney through our unique Celtic culture. Stay right in the middle of a history that has been shaped by centuries of storytelling and music.

  • Fiddlers Delight
Wander along the scenic waterfront boardwalk to where the world's largest fiddle (1) stands as a tribute to our Celtic and Acadian musical traditions. Known as the “Big Fiddle of the Ceilidh,” it is worth a stop to take a selfie. Did you know? Ceilidh is a Gaelic word which translates in to “visit”.
  • Follow the Signs
Another great spot for quick selfie is at the Sydney sign (2) next to City Hall. This colourful 24-foot sign was created by local vendors. Sunset is the best time to take your shot.
  • That Pub Life
Stroll over to Breton Crafthouse (3), a newly opened brewpub offering craft beers and elevated pub fare with live music.

Stage Lights & Local Craft

Downtown Sydney serves as the cultural hub of Cape Breton Island. With a growing theatre scene and a vibrant art community, creative inspiration is always around every corner.

  • A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
Take the Downtown Sydney Art Walk self-guided tour for a glimpse of the creativity of our talented artists. Take in the various murals and installations inspired by our maritime culture and local pride.

You may see The Lyceum, known as “The Grand Old Lady,” along the way. It’s an integral part of the historic architectural landscape of downtown Sydney.
  • Get Crafty
Check out the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design (4) to discover the work of over 100 local artisans. From intricate pottery to hand-woven tartans, it’s the perfect place to find a piece of Cape Breton to take home.
  • The Show Must Go On
Music, dance and theatre live at Highland Arts Theatre (The HAT) (5), a beautifully converted historic church that features everything from traditional Celtic music to contemporary productions. You will leave laughing, cheering and maybe shedding a tear or two.

BONUS: We have lively nightlife too! Pop into cozy pubs where live fiddle music fills the air. Our local pubs feature singer-songwriters and traditional sessions that turn strangers into fast friends.

Paws, Paths & Promenades

Do you know who else loves a leisurely walk... your dog! Travel is even better when you bring your 4-legged furry companion along. We aim to make your pet's stay just as comfortable as yours.

  • Walk the Walk
The Sydney Boardwalk (6) is right outside our doors. It’s a popular scenic path along the waterfront with a paved, flat route that's people-friendly too.
  • A Real Tail-wagger
A 10-minute walk will get you to Wentworth Park Shoreline (7), a scenic urban oasis with tree-lined paths and ponds. It’s the ideal spot for a mid-afternoon frisbee session.
